FFI with Guests

January 19, 2011 was a special date for me, as one of my absolute favorite bands (Fighting For Ithaca) held a show at Bully’s Rehearsal Studios in New Westminster (with guests Radio For Help, The Joyride, and Seventh Rain). Only 60 tickets were available (only through presale, not at the door), and the show sold out, which is both a good thing and a bad thing. Good; because it meant that there would be lots of people for the bands to perform for. Bad; because the room that the show was held in was cramped and in need of air conditioning, a window, or some other form of ventilation. Despite the lack of air and the terrible acoustics in the room, the concert was incredible.

The Joyride opened the show, and I think that they had the most difficult time slot, as many people in the crowd did not know many of their songs, and were not yet riled up by the music. However, they have a great stage presence, and I must admit that it’s amusing to watch their drummer (or rather, his long hair…) as he plays. I enjoyed their set, and I regret not learning the songs on their EP beforehand, as I would have liked to sing along. The second band, Radio For Help, are from Edmonton, Alberta, and while they’re a good band, it was difficult to hear their lead vocalist sing. That may be because of technical difficulties (he did seem to be easier to hear closer to the end of the set), but it was sort of annoying (you can see his mouth moving, but can’t tell if words are coming out!). The third band, Seventh Rain, were an amazing band from Calgary, Alberta. It was during their set that the crowd really started to get into dancing and cheering, though it was obvious that barely anyone had heard their music before (the only time when almost everyone in the room sang along was during their cover of Airplanes by B.O.B.). More so than the previous two bands, they interacted with the crowd and each other, telling stories of the last time they were in Vancouver and other misadventures (the frontman even claiming that he had just been in Hawaii and that was why he was so tanned, not because he goes to tanning salons every week as the bassist said).

Finally, Fighting For Ithaca took the stage, and it was clear whose fans filled the room. As the opening bars of “Trial By Fire” played, a huge cheer swept the room, and tens of fans screamed/sang every word in time with Curtis (lead vocals). The band played other fan favorites such as “Cause and Effect”, and the fan-interactive “Cityscape”, as well as three newer songs (“Lights Out Baby”, “Waffles”, and another that had never before been played for fans). Among the standard stage banter and drummer jokes (“What did the drummer say when he was kicked out of the band?”“I wrote a song!”), fans were spoken to and thanked for coming out to the show, and they insisted on showing my hand-drawn poster to everyone (I’m still embarrassed!). It’s the little things like talking to fans that make a band great, and FFI have definitely got fan interaction down to a fine art. Not to mention the amazing music, of course! This show made my week for sure, and I cannot wait to see them live again. Be sure to download the Thanks For Waiting EP, and make sure you let record labels know how amazing they are! Some labels are already taking notice, and I for one am so happy for these guys who have made my life so much better!

Stole this off my friend Joey’s tumblr…
I figure I might as well do this… It should help me learn to love tumblr, I guess. I feel like I’ve neglected tumblr ever since…well, since I signed up.
Plus, this way, I can promote some of my favorite songs and review them. Win win situation. ;)

It’s the glue that holds the rhythm and melody together

It’s that low end rumble that no one really listens to but misses if it’s not there

It’s the instrument that most musicians don’t start out on as their first choice, but often end up playing because no one else will. Then they discover they…

The last part made me laugh. I love Tommy. I also want to learn bass. But I probably won’t.

2011

Although it’s late January, and I should have posted this a long time ago, I thought I’d do a Most Anticipated Albums of 2011 list. Alternative Press has a great list, but these are my personal calendar-circles (as AP rarely features Canadian musicians, or unsigned ones).

Katy’s Top Six Most Anticipated Albums/EPs of 2011:

1. All Time Low - Dirty Work (Interscope Records) I’m really looking forward to this album, as All Time Low are my favorite band. This release will be special to me, as I unfortunately hadn’t heard of them prior to their 2009 release, thus making Dirty Work the first ATL album I can anticipate.

2. Marianas Trench - Untitled (604 Records) I love Marianas Trench, but as with All Time Low, I haven’t been a fan long enough to remember the release of the previous albums. However, both of their released full-lengths have had a huge impact on my life, and I eagerly await the new album. Note: I’m not entirely sure if this will be a 2011 release, but it is likely.

3. Fighting For Ithaca - Untitled (Unsigned) As a local and dedicated fan of Fighting For Ithaca, I’ve been privileged enough to hear a couple of their new songs before anyone else. I hold no doubt that the new EP will be just as incredible as the last, and in particular, eagerly await the recorded version of “Waffles”, as the song has been dubbed by fans.

4. The Hollow Empire - Untitled (Unsigned) The three demo songs and one single by this band hold memories of summer for me, and I can’t wait for more. This is the only little-known unsigned band that I haven’t lost interest with, and it’s definitely because of the music. I hope for a debut album as amazing as the debut single, “Your Best Act.”

5. Avril Lavigne - Goodbye Lullaby (RCA Records) I’ll admit, I am an Avril Lavigne fan. I have been since I was nine. I do love her old albums better than her 2007 release, but I’ve read that Goodbye Lullaby will take a new, more mature path than anything she’s put out in the past. Already, I love the lead single, “What The Hell”, and that song is supposed to be the least personal one on the album. Because of that, I’m excited.

6. The Latency - Untitled (Maple Music Recordings) I’m not sure if this will turn out to be a 2011 release, but I’m hopeful. I know that The Latency have been recording and writing for months already, and so there is evidence that it will be released this year. They premiered a few songs during the can’T keEp A SecrEt tour with Faber Drive in spring 2010, and I loved those songs (which may not even make the album!). If the new album is even half as good as the debut album, I’ll be more than satisfied.

Dear Parents. Jasmine was in a relationship with a dirty homeless boy named Aladdin. Snow White lived alone with 7 men. Pinnochio was a liar. Robin Hood was a thief. Tarzan walked around without clothes on. A stranger kissed sleeping beauty and she married him. Cinderella lied and snuck out at night to attend a party. You can’t blame us. We were taught to be a rebel since a young age.

I’m trying to think of a Disney movie where the main character went to concerts. So far, nothing.

Christmas Music

Seeing as it’s December 23 today, and Christmas is in two days(!), I feel that I should pay homage to the amazing Christmas music I’ve been listening to. Not old-time classics, but new Christmas songs by some of my favorite bands.

My Top Nine New Christmas Songs:

1. Christmas With You - Artist Vs Poet I’m so in love with this song, it’s not even funny. It’s incredibly sweet, and I believe that guitarist Joe Kirkland also sings on this track. It’s an all-around beautiful Christmas song (new classic!)

2. Baby Please Come Home - Josh Ramsay The Marianas Trench frontman contributed his cover of this song to ‘A 604 Records Christmas’, and he does an incredible job at sounding like he really means what he’s singing. Despite this not being an extremely ‘Christmassy Christmas song’, it still suits the season.

3. Merry Christmas Kiss My Ass - All Time Low The title doesn’t sound like it belongs with the nice Christmas songs, but this is a great song that pokes fun at people who end relationships during the holidays. Thank you, All Time Low, for a song that many people can relate to.

4. Sing In Celebration - Faber Drive Another contribution to ‘A 604 Records Christmas’, this song puts elements of classic Christmas songs such as “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” into a new, catchy beat. A bit more religious than most songs I like, but still a great song! It’s tough to put more than one song together into a new one.

5. Mile High Christmas - Breathe Carolina Maybe not such a good song for kids, as this song talks about marijuana cookies and Santa getting high on Christmas Eve. However, the music sounds awesome, and the lyrics are actually pretty funny.

6. Mittens - Carly Rae Jepsen A very cute Christmassy song that, surprisingly, is about having broken up with a person and they aren’t around this holiday (you wouldn’t know it by hearing the title!). You have to listen to the lyrics to really get this song, but Carly Rae Jepsen did a good job on it.

7. Red White and You - These Kids Wear Crowns VERY catchy song. The repetitive lyrics are actually cute, and the general idea of the song is very true of the holiday season.

8. For Christmas Time - Suzie McNeil Incredible vocals and beautiful lyrics accompanied by a great melody make for an amazing song that exudes a feeling of just wanting to get home for Christmas… While still being modern.

9. Frostbite Kisses - Jakalope I don’t like Jakalope much, but this song isn’t bad, and though it has sort of an eerie feel about it, I like it and it reminds me of winter. However, if you don’t like non-traditional Christmas music, steer clear of this song (more so than other non-traditional songs I’ve mentioned).

There are many other great new Christmas songs on the albums “A 604 Records Christmas” and “‘Tis the Season to be Fearless”, which some of the above songs are on. Just because I didn’t put a song on my Top Nine list doesn’t mean it isn’t an awesome song!

Merry Christmas, or if you don’t celebrate Christmas, happy holidays!

Marianas Trench

December 18 was the final concert that Marianas Trench is going to do until their new album comes out. The last Masterpiece Theatre show! Luckily, I was able to go (due to a very nice dad who got presale tickets and the show being in Vancouver).

The opening band, Jakalope, were okay. Not my favorite, but then, I don’t like female voices very much (it’s a weird thing I have) so I’m a bit biased. I just don’t like Jakalope much, but I’m sure that for their fans, the performance was amazing.

Marianas Trench, on the other hand, are one of my very favorite bands, and even though I’d seen them three times already, the December 18 show was still new and exciting. Of course, my favorite Trench song (Acadia) was the third song played, which made me VERY happy and ensured that my voice would be ruined from screaming the words. The band did an amazing performance, and one of the highlights of the show was during Sing Sing, which, at one point, went something like this… Josh Ramsay: “I- I- I- I- I- I’m not sleeping. You say-OH JESUS CHRIST!” (Someone had thrown a thong at him and it startled him. He continued the song, but during a break in the vocals he asked if the thong was used and hung it on Mike Ayley’s mic stand.) A crowd favorite was, no surprise, Shake Tramp, and almost every fan in the theatre did the signature hand actions to the chorus. This time, at least, everyone knew the last line to the chorus (the first time I saw Trench in concert, no one knew). Another highlight of the show was witnessing the band being presented with the plaque for Masterpiece Theatre going platinum. The Trench boys didn’t know that 604 Records was going to present the plaque, so it was a surprise for everyone.

The encore was incredible. Ramsay acoustically performed his contribution song from the 604 Records Christmas album (Baby Please Come Home) and despite his claim of not knowing the words very well, he did an awesome job of singing the song. Good To You was the next song, again, acoustically, and featuring Jessica Lee, who guest-starred in the music video. Finally, Ramsay performed Lover Dearest, much to the delight of the crowd (Lover Dearest is not played often due to it being difficult to sing), and the rest of the band finally came back on stage. The concert ended (no surprise) with Cross My Heart, and the audience departed the show feeling riled up once more.

One drawback of the show was that the merch table sold out of almost everything before the show started. My friend and I got to the table after Jakalope played, and there were only two shirt designs (one of which had only one shirt left) and a few postcards left. I bought a shirt, but my friend beat me to the last postcard. Ah, well. Life.

Fighting For Ithaca

This is a bit overdue, but I really just wanted to give this amazing band a shoutout.

On December 5th the Vancouver band Fighting For Ithaca put on a “super secret show” for their most loyal local fans. They put out the info via Twitter and interested fans emailed them for more details. A friend and I headed down to Army & Navy in New Westminster for the show with time to spare and waited with the other fans for the band to appear. Of course, they were running behind schedule and were about fifteen minutes late, but eventually the drummer (Phil) greeted us and directed us to the rehearsal studio, which was about two and a half blocks away. (Two other band members passed us in a car on the way up, cheering loudly and honking the horn madly.) Once at the studio, us fans had to wait outside while the band set up inside, but it was all good because clearly, we were the most loyal fans FFI have.

The boys started the show with the song ‘Trial By Fire’, and there was an immediate buzz in the room caused by loud, crappy sound, and the excitement of seventeen fans. FFI played about six songs in total, including two new, never-before-played-for-fans numbers (One of which was so new, it was still untitled. The lead vocalist asked for title ideas and the song immediately became known to the fans as ‘Waffles In The Evening’).

After the show, the band stayed and chatted with fans, posed for photos, joked about touching each other, and signed CDs, shirts, and anything else thrown at them. One particularly amusing event was the random breakout of an acapella version of “A Whole New World” from Disney’s Aladdin, which four of the five band members joined in on and knew all the words to.

The show was a close, warm-fuzzy-feeling-type experience for us fans, and the fact that Fighting For Ithaca were willing to connect to us was very rewarding. What’s better than loving a band who love you back and who you can talk to easily, almost anytime?
